Truth Tellers is a film about American courage. Shortly after 9/11 and catalyzed by lies behind the Iraq attack, political artist Robert Shetterly undertook a campaign to do what he knew best – paint – and began surrounding himself with Americans whose dissenting voices courageously defend democracy.

Nearly 20 years and 250 portraits later, Americans Who Tell the Truth has become his enduring passion. Into each painted portrait he scratches a quote crystallizing his subject’s core beliefs about American values and ideals. Through following Shetterly’s visits to individuals and communities across this nation, Truth Tellers explores his journey to inspire and empower Americans to emulate his “models of courageous citizenship”.  His story is an urgent reminder that courage and dissent play a critical role in protecting American rights and liberties and indeed our democracy. His grief and anger launched this series. Hope for a better future drives him now.
