The Arts Council of the Valley is pleased to present The Blue Room, a group exhibition featuring works of art by students in James Madison University’s Advanced Photography class. The show, which is appropriate for mature audiences, opens Friday, December 4 from 5-7 p.m. There will be complimentary appetizers and beverages for the public to enjoy while reflecting on the various artists’ interpretations of the color blue.
Students featured in The Blue Room explain, “We are exploring the psychology of blue and its subconscious nuances that affect the individual. The color blue represents various dichotomies of feeling and meaning, as well as associations of blue—tranquility to depression, non-threatening to authoritative, and from conservatism to idealism.” Now it is up to the viewer to interpret the work and experience the power of color. These personal works relate to the public with a universal theme surrounding a primary color, a color we have known since childhood and will continue to see throughout adulthood.
The photography program at James Madison University encourages an experimental and interdisciplinary approach to image making. Making art generates productive thinking, stimulates problem solving, and promotes new understandings of the environment. The Advanced Color Photography class emphasizes use of color and color theory to produce images that express the individual artistic vision of each photographer; however, for this exhibition students adapted their individual styles to create a unified body of work.
The student collaborators and artists, include Brittany Jones, Jamie Tomik, Jennifer Breeden, Jordan Morris, Julia Lichtblau, Kat Garone, Karim Ezzat, Kelley Oliver, Kimberly Lyddane, Liz Swain, Nicki Metcalf, and Shannon Wright. They are under the tutelage of Corinne Diop, Professor of Art and Graduate Coordinator in James Madison University’s School of Art and Art History.
