The Arts Council of the Valley announces the October 7, First Fridays Downtown schedule and participating partners. The free celebration of culture and community is held in downtown Harrisonburg from 5-7 p.m. on the first Friday of the month from April through October. The schedule of venues and planned events follow:
1. Arts Council of the Valley’s Smith House | 311 S. Main St. • Ken Szmagaj’s Paintings: A Retrospective, painting, Sarah Derr’s photos of Costa Rica, and Eric Kniss, Con_SEQUENTIAL Complex public art installation in the Sculpture Garden.
2. Harrisonburg League of Therapists | 312 S. Main St. • Seth Barch, Photography | Rhythm Playground Drumming Circle!
3. The Virginia Quilt Museum | 301 S. Main St. • Unity in Diversity, a show by the Country School Quilters of Montpelier, VA.
4. Asbury United Methodist Church | 205 S. Main St. • CLOSED for a private event.
5. Hardesty-Higgins House Visitors Center | 212 S. Main St. • CLOSED
6. The Yellow Button | 192 S. Main St. • William Jeavons, mixed media.
7. Massanutten Regional Library | 174 S. Main St. • Classic Carriage rides depart from here!
8. Ten Thousand Villages | 181 S. Main St. • Christmas Comes Early, a celebration of the Christmas season with the debut hand carved, hand painted nativities and ornaments from more than 30 countries. Live music from Ken Brunk and refreshments will be served: The Women’s Bean Project, Ten Bean Soup and hot apple cider.
9. Linda S. Hoover, CFP, Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. | 165 S. Main St. • Denise Kanter Allen, painting and Elliott Downs, mixed media.
10. Clementine Café | 153 S. Main St. • Various artists, mixed media.
11. Shenandoah Bicycle Co. and PULP Smoothie Bar | 135 S. Main St. • Organic Acai Bowls and Smoothies.
12. Cocolicious | 14 Newman St. • “Cocolicious” cupcakes!
13. Dance & Co. | 115 S. Main St. • Closed for October 7 event.
14. OASIS Gallery | 103 S. Main St. • Opening reception celebrates two exhibits: Carmen Rose’s one-woman show Confessions – Twenty Years Exploring Color through October 31, and member theme show All Creatures Great and Small through November 30. Live music by Mel Lee and Matt Morris. Refreshments provided by artists.

20b. Court Square Theater | 61 Graham St. • Latino Film Festival, Hermano at 7 p.m. and Habana Eva at 9:30 p.m.
20c. Estland Design | 41-D3 Court Square • Where the Mountain Meets the Sea, April Sedeen Estep, painting and live music at 8:00 p.m. by 8 Bit Bentley.
21a. Cally’s Restaurant and Brewing Co. | 41 Court Square • CLOSED. Capital Ale House opening October 2011.

Special Attractions:
1. Horse-Drawn Rides with Classic Carriage. Anytime between 5-8 p.m., join Sonny and Cher, two beautiful Belgian Draft Horses, on a 20-minute tour around downtown Harrisonburg. Rides depart from the Massanutten Regional Library 174 S. Main St., $5 adults / $3 children.
2. James Madison University’s Introduction to Fiber Arts & Intermediate Fiber Arts classes present Twisted and Tangled: A Yarnsplosion, a fun, temporary public art installation through out the downtown community. Sites include the gazebo/wishing well on Court Square, Massanutten Regional Library’s mosaic wall, fountain on the Hardesty-Higgins House patio, the Arts Council of the Valley’s Smith House, the cannon in front of the City Hall Building, Liberty Lady at the intersection of Liberty Street and Main Street, the cannon in front of Memorial Hall across from Greenberry’s, and Classic Carriages with Terry and his horses Sonny and Cher.
3. Blue Ridge Community College’s a cappella group, Pitches & Tones, will be performing a various venues through out the evening, including the Arts Council of the Valley’s Smith House, Virginia Quilt Museum, Massanutten Regional Library, Ten Thousand Villages, OASIS Gallery, Polished, Inc., and All Things Virginia.
