Artist of the Week: Dave Bascom
I walk into the Smith House and allow myself to wander through the gallery, allow each piece to wash over me and completely envelop my senses. I take in all the colors, and how they come together to form the final product. I notice each stroke mark that is left behind as the brush trails through the paint. I gaze at the ridges in the canvas and at how the paint clings to each indentation, how the light glistens on each waxy surface.
Each painting has a story, some of which are easier to see, others are more complex and kept as hidden treasures available only to the invested audience members. For some, the works tell their stories.
No one would ever guess that the man behind these paintings once wanted to play football for the Washington Redskins or that he and his fiancé are the proud parents of a bunny rabbit, Wyatt. Dave Bascom, 30, is different. He sees more than just the surface of all of life’s things. He sees the whole artful picture. Read more
Ruddle project discussions spark interest! 9:45 walk-through
The discussion series about the Ruddle Building turning into an arts center has sparked interest! Nearly 20 people have RSVP’ed to Kai Degner for the Saturday sessions in May (email director@valleyarts.org). A few will need to miss one, and that’s ok. A listserv is being developed for people who are interested, so contact Kai if you want to stay in the loop but can’t make it to the meetings.
There will be a 9:45 walk-through of the Newman-Ruddle building (2 North Main Street/22 East Market Street) before the discussion starts at the Community Mediation Center (165 South Main Street, a couple blocks down the street).

Ruddle Building Discussions Start This Weekend - The New HBurg Torpedo Factory?
Interested in being part of a new arts center in downtown Harrisonburg? Two local arts enthusiasts have purchased the Ruddle building on Court Square (Old Dominion Coffee Shop, formerly Daily Grind) and are interested in turning it into an arts space - and they need the arts community to make it happen!
To get the brainstorming started on the right foot, a three-session discussion will be convened for anyone with serious interest in getting involved and/or contributing to the initial vision. A group of 10-15 people is sought to join in this series of conversations, which will be facilitated by Kai Degner, Executive Director of the Arts Council of the Valley. Read more

OASIS, 150 Franklin Street, and other locations also had good attendance. See below for the WHSV clip (sorry, Ashley - we can’t help what frame the video uses!). The next First Friday is June 6.

Artist of the Week: Mary-Liz Humphrey
She breezes through the room, as if gliding on air; her feet barely seem to touch the ground, and her skirt sweeps along behind her. Her voice tinkles with laughter as she talks, her charisma obvious, and as she smiles, her eyes light up under a sheath of curly auburn hair.
She shows off her studio with proud, grand gestures, and floats from the main room to the dance floor, pointing out pictures of past performances at every opportunity. She excitedly discusses the past costumes that were made by parents of the dancers; her face lights up as she remembers the skill and work that went into the make up. She animatedly tells the story behind the special floor that the studio now has for toe work.
One can quickly sense that she is a woman who cares passionately about her work, and about the students she influences. Read more
