Call to Artists: Submit work for “The Blue Hotel” Exhibit
“The Blue Hotel” Exhibit: Artworks inspired by Stephen Crane
Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage and “The Blue Hotel,” once described his work as “an effect of mental light and shade, if you like; something done in thought similar to that which the French impressionists do in colour; something meaningless and at the same time overwhelming, crushing, monstrous.” Though taken from his “War Memories,” the remark invites us to look at the painterly qualities in Crane’s writings. Over the last century critics have spilt much ink doing just that. For this exhibit, artists are asked to spill their paints—to create artworks inspired by Crane’s short story “The Blue Hotel.” (find the story here: http://etext.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/CraBlue.html)
The exhibit will be held at The Artful Dodger in Harrisonburg and will run from February 13th to March 1st, coinciding with The Playhouse’s world-premiere stage production of Stephen Crane’s “The Blue Hotel,” directed by Michael Trocchia.
One piece will be awarded $100 for best in show. Two pieces will be awarded $50 for honorable mention.
Submissions must be received by January 23, 2009. Artists will be notified by February 2.
Work must be suitable for display and transport. All accepted artwork will be displayed for sale (or NFS if desired) and all proceeds will go to artists.
To submit, please email trocchia@gmail.com with your name, phone number, and a high-quality image of your submission(s). Include your name and “art submission” in the subject of your email. Or you may submit by mail to Michael Trocchia, 520 Alleghany Ave., Staunton, VA 24401.
For more information, contact Michael Trocchia at (540) 885-2116 or at trocchia@gmail.com. This project is made possible, in part, through a grant from the Arts Council of the Valley.

RED- Art Show Invitational at the Darrin-McHone Arts Gallery
The opening will be held from 5-7pm on Friday, December 5th. Show will hang through the month of December. Gallery hours are 9-5, Mon-Fri.
Some of the areas finest artists join forces to bathe the walls in red at the Darrin-McHone Arts Gallery for the month of December. Color will be the binding agent given this diverse pool of talent.
In human color psychology, red carries the strongest reaction of all the colors, and has long been associated with heat, energy and emotions. It has been used throughout history and nature to express anger, love, passion and sacrifice. It has also been used to imply danger, warning or attract extra attention.
Participating are Karen Lee, Scott Murray, Barbara Gautcher, Greg Ballou, Keith Mills, Ken Szmagaj, Robert Bersson, Ashley McCoy, Elaine Hurst, Cindy Greene, Denise Kanter, Cyndi Gusler, Kevin Postupack, Richard Faut, Judith Ligon, and more.
What a thrill it will be to see how the color red has been employed by these individuals. Not to mention how the collection of works will respond to one another in this new context!
